1/2/2024 0 Comments Baseball boy highest level![]() What we have now is bad number 3,4 and 5 starters who throw 94 rather than bad number 3 ,4 and 5 starters who throw 89. A Willie Mays, Mel Ott or a Pedro Martinez or Greg Maddux probably would not make the majors today, depriving the game of an all time great talent. As players get bigger and pitchers get faster, there is a phasing out of skilled players who are not so big or who don't throw that hard. So I personally think the playing level from 90 years ago was similar to today - those players may have had less measureable "tools" but they maximized what they did to a higher degree. However, measurable physical characteristics, often due to diet and training, probably have increased. I have the same kind of thoughts about the 1920's and 1930's players - I think their skill level (for whatever gifts they had) was higher because they played more games (including exhibition and barnstorming) and practiced more. They played more games and practiced more, because they had fewer distractions (electronics of all kinds are the number one reason according to Dorothy). One of her thoughts was that the best basketball in her career was circa 1980 because the kids had a higher dedication level than they do today. She has been winning Illinois state championships for many years. I was reading a quote from Dorothy Gaters (National High School HOF, the number one female basketball coach in Chicago for 40+ years, 1100+ career victories) recently in Sports Illustrated. This won't be popular, but I think the baseball skill level in the MLB and NeL was probably at least as high in the 1920's and 1930's as it is today (or at least very similar).
